I’m SO excited!! Please forgive me, but I never knew what Fresh Turmeric looked like. I only used Turmeric in it’s beautiful neon yellow orange powder form.
Moving to Berlin, and not knowing German, is a challenge in the grocery store. I wanted to buy Turmeric but didn’t know what it was called in German. (My internet wasn’t working on my phone – more about German internet on another day.) I stared at the various spices for a very long time and picked what I believed looked like Turmeric. Needless to say, I took it home and it ended up being a curry mix.
Still on a mission to find Turmeric, that morning I was at the Eat Performance Cafe, and saw the German word for Turmeric – Kurkuma!! Now the German word for Turmeric makes sense. Turmeric contains curcumin, the polyphenol identified as its primary active component and which exhibits over 150 potentially therapeutic activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. I went back to the Bio-mart with my new found German word and I saw ‘Kurkuma’ above a basket full of what looked liked ‘mini orange ginger root fingers’ or ‘large orange maggots’ (gross… sorry.) I found FRESH TURMERIC! Excited to try fresh organic turmeric, I needed to find a recipe worthy.
“GOLDEN MILK”
There are a few variations of ‘Golden Milk’ or ‘Turmeric Tea’ on the internet. I used a variation of the recipe from Wellness Mama. It was Delicious! This tea has now become a daily ritual.
